A fixture of Melbourne/Naarm's electronic, free improvisation, and art music scenes, Abby Sundborn’s music fuses her background in classical cello performance and teaching, academic degrees in interactive composition from the Victorian College of the Arts, and a diploma in sound production from Collarts, along with her presence in Naarm's underground experimental and rave scenes. Drawing on a deep knowledge of microtonality, sound design, and composition techniques, Sundborn creates intricate, multi-layered, dimensional sonic tapestries that unfold as both delicate and bold. Her compositions blend rich textures and complex sonic structures, navigating the fine boundaries between organic and synthetic sounds. These works are informed by her ongoing exploration of human perception of time, the effects of sound on emotion, and the somatic processes necessary to transform restless energy into spaces of reflection and ease. The result is music that is at once elegant, imaginary, and uncanny, inviting listeners into new world-building soundscapes.
In 2021, she was granted the New North Emerging Artist Commission. She has since released her debut album on Altered States Tapes and performed at notable events, including the Melbourne Now festival and MPavilion as part of their Dusk till Dawn series. A frequent performer at Make It Up Club (MIUC), which prioritizes projects that challenge the boundaries of current musical trends while also welcoming traditional forms of avant-garde improvisation, Sundborn continues to push the boundaries of sound. She has worked with and performed alongside locally and internationally acclaimed artists, including Lisa Lerkenfeldt, Third Space, Rully Shabara, Eek, Helen Svoboda, Bella Brown, Callum Mintzis, J, Ana Roxane, Grace Fergusson, and Gi, to name a few.
She holds a Diploma of Music Production at Collarts and is currently completing a Bachelor of Music, majoring in Interactive Composition at Victorian Collage of the Arts.
